WEEEEEELLLLLL HELLOOOOOO,

What’s up ladies and gentlemen?!?!?!?!?  Well Week one is over and some of you already know that we lost our first outing 13-9.  It was a real bummer because we came back in the third to tie the game at 9 going into the fourth.  Then things seemed to unravel.  I am not sure if we just ran out of steam or if we just made some mistakes, but either way we did not answer Boston’s 4 goal run and let this one slip away.

As a whole however I think we showed some real good things.  We played really well for two quarters but really crapped the bed for the other two.  Also should note, the Boston fans are crazy.  They have this guy who sits right behind the opposing team’s bench with a crew and he just rips into whomever he can for the whole 60 mins.  AND YES HE FOUND MR. BERRY!  I have to say it was the first time I actually have been heckled on this level…what made it worse was that the face-off battle was a pretty fierce one.  Jenkins and I went back and forth for four quarters with him finally getting the edge in the fourth…I should also note that this was the first time since day one of training camp that me and my wingmen had a chance to play full field together(also note that Boston had full field scrimmages EVERY WEEK of training camp)…NO EXCUSES THOUGH, Jenkins and his wing men did a great job, as Jenkins always does, he did a great job of tying me up, knowing that I like to get off the X quick….OK back to the heckler, this guy actually had me believing I had barely won any face-offs all night…it was not until much later that I realized that until the fourth quarter I was actually winning the battle . . .and the power of the heckler is pretty interesting!

Anyway I watched Boston vs. Rochester last night and all I can say is WOW, it was like a highlight reel, Rochester and Boston rattled off like 12 diving/trick goals including a one handed underhand behind the back shot by John Grant Jr….seriously check out the highlight, I would not be surprised to see it on ESPN.  Anyway I was interested in the Face-off battle for obvious reasons, mostly because I hold Alex Smith in high regard and I wanted to see how he faired against the man who gave me fits the previous week.

Alex and I have the exact same style, in fact I used to train him in high school, so it only makes sense that we would play like each other….WOW, Jenkins laid the smokes to his A$$.  I believe Smith was 13/31 at the X which was real surprising…it also made me feel better about being just under 50% against Jenkins. . .I cannot wait to play Jenkins again in June…I’m gonna be a whole new man, since I will have several games under my belt by then, and I will be real hungry, for a piece of him.

I will end with this story…In 2001, my senior year of college and without question my best year of college lacrosse we played UVA in the first game of the season.  We lost 11-7 and I was just under 50% in the game against, none other than Dave Jenkins.  This was the only sub 50% day I had all year and we ended up in the final four.  Later that year, in the MLL Combine I had the chance to play Jenkins again, and went 100% (in only like 6 attempts) but still, it was a WAY different story than in earlier in the season.

I do not believe in coincidences, I do believe that history repeats itself, and I expect to have a great season according to the way this one has started!

Keep tuning in, we play Denver next week and we will have some new faces (I am betting that the two most important ones will be Rabil and Peyser, soo sick) who will likely play a big part in the rest of our season.  Wish me luck against Snider! (And as always sorry about the poor spelling!)

Whats up guys, I thought I should jump online and fill you all in on what is going on with me and the pride.  As I said in the last blog I made the team, what I did not tell you all is that I am in fact starting this weekend against Boston.  Now ordinarily I would be relieved except that I have to have a pretty good showing on Saturday night, I mean all indications are that they are very happy with how I came to camp. . .in shape, with a much improved defensive game and all fired up.  Thing is the draft is the following week and we have 9 picks. . actually  pretty much the whole team is probably a little on edge since we are clearly going to have a big draft.

I did not mention it a before but in week two of training camp I pulled my groin, I did not mention it because I did not want to seem like I had an excuse if I was released.  since I was not and I am starting, I can tell you all that I was able to rehab it every day for the last two weeks and I think I will be close to 100% on Saturday night.  I am a little nervous however about the lack of face-off time I have had since training camp started.  Since they changed the face-off AGAIN, going back to saying “set” before the whistle, I am a bit nervous that my timing will be off, it has been 7 years since I have taken a face-off that was done this way.  I have been practicing at home but as I said I have taken very few live draws in training camp. . . .I did experience some success while doing it so I think I will be fine.

I think this weekend is going to be pretty sweet.  I am hoping to catch up with Jay Horowitz
( a former Towson Teammate) and two of my best friends in the world (Josh Scout and Chuck Fry) are coming to the game and staying the night to hang out in Boston.  I just hope I put on a good show and the team comes out with a win!

I am flying into Boston saturday morning on the same flight as Ben Defelice, a good friend and one of Saturday nights opponents.  When I arrive I have 4 hours to waste until our walk through so i plan on either going to the hotel or simply grabbing a bite in the city.

Wish me luck guys, so far so good but it is a long season and as you may remember it was not just my goal to make the team but to “make it stick”!

Since I like to listen to music before games I was hoping that some of you would give me some ideas for good pump up music. . .What is YOUR favorite song to listen to right before you step on the field???  maybe it will make its way into my ipod for saturday night!

What’s up ladies and gentleman?

I know it has been a while since I have written so I figured you were all getting worried about the ol’ dog…well good news, I am NOT cut!  In fact I cannot see how this could be going any better.  It is truly amazing what being in great shape has done for my game, and not just facing off.  Doing the power hour class and the training regiment that SOFletes sent me, I have actually turned into quite a decent defensive middie. . .I know, I know, you are all thinking I have taken some peodi (spelling???) or something, but it is true.  Since am in better shape, and my footwork is highly improved, I am actually playing good defense, which inevitably will be the part of my game that gets me on the field.  As I see it no matter how great at face-offs you are, in this league you will lose face-offs. . .it is a fact of life, every face-off man is good. . .the best ones however can win 50-55% of the draws and play defense for just long enough to keep the other team from scoring when they are on the field.  Therefore I knew that I had to get my butt into good shape and learn how to play defense!  And I did.

OK let’s talk about the team, and training camp.  I truly like the guys on the team, many of them I played with or against at some point in my lacrosse career, so the transition has been easy.  We are trying to change the way we play as a team this year, by getting up and down the field more and pushing transition.  Although many of you have probably heard that Hughes, Harrison and Hubbard all went to L.A. and Doneger Mollet and Haugen all retired, we are still optimistic.  we have a solid core and a ridiculous draft coming our way. . .5 of the first 12 picks and 9 overall, in a very deep draft (including the number 2 and 3 draft picks, I am hoping for Rabil and Peyser. . .note, Peyser is the best two way middie in the nation, and should be on the tawaaraton finalist list)…anyway defensively we have a real solid core in McClay, Peyser, Davis and Glatzel, our attack will likely be Urick, Unterstein, and Ford and Middie is wide open, but as I see it Rewkowski, Bolin, Yevoli, and  Peyser will be holding down the middie front, with guys like Chemotte filling in the gaps.

The team has taken on a new train of thought and winning mentality.  I cannot wait for our first game in Boston, I will be squaring off against an old rival in Dave Jenkins and an old teammate and friend in Ben DeFelice. . .should be fun.

Anyway, I’m keeping this one short (mostly because I am at work!), this is the last week of training camp and then we head to Boston. . .wish me luck!

Just taking a moment to thank Mr. “Hard”.  I am not sure I have ever worked as hard as I did last evening and this morning.  I just kept hearing the same quote over and over. “You’ll get cut”.  Now regardless of who you are, I am certain of this; you are either a complete moron, or a brilliant strategist.  either way I win, because of “Hard”, and other babling idiots (mostly friends) I am more focused than I have been throughout this whole process.  And the best part of it all is that no matter what happens I can honestly say I gave it my best.  If this does not work out at least I will have gotten back into shape, and lost over 20lbs.  Im pushin 30 so taking off weight, and training is not as easy as it used to be (especially since I have not trained seriously since college, not even when I played for L.A.).

Now for the last couple of months I have not paid any attention to weight increases(on max outs), in fact I have been so busy trying to make my weight training another form of aerobic workout I have completely forgotten to test those things.  A couple of days ago I was able to jump on the bench and the squat and test those two movements, and boy was I suprised.  When I started I could only get 275lbs up once if I was really feeling good.  On this day I was able to get 315lbs up four times, and it was after a power hour session (who knows how many times I can actually get that up if I am not so drained!)…squats were also much improved, from 350lbs 6 times to 450lbs 6 times, and I feel pretty good about both of these increases (since they came in a 2 and 1/2 month period).

In the meantime I will continue to work my ass off and I will be thinking of you Mr. “Hard”, in fact I will be putting the face of every person I want to beat down in my head as I hear the words “You’ll get cut”!  Make sure to introduce yourself someday, I cant wait to meet you.

I am probably not going to post a blog for the next week, so I can clear my thoughts and focus on lacrosse.  But I want to thank everyone who contributed to my blog and to this website.  The men who started it have a great idea here and I hope it continues to grow.  I will return with more posts as training camp continues. Wish me luck, unless of course you are “hard”, in his case just keep running your mouth, it is the only thing you do well (yeah,  I know who you are, and you should be focusing on your job right now, not this website).

Whats up folks?

Two more weeks and Im getting a bit nervous…after all of this training and talking about training I want it more than ever. Im finally down to about 220 and intend on continuing to lose weight through the first couple of weeks of training camp.  I saw steve berger of the long island lizards last evening and he is already talking trash about picking up all of my GB’s. . .I asked him to wait until I made the team to bring the garbage.  Either way I have some serious butterflies growing here, which is a good thing.  Over the years I can remember that in the games I was most nervous I played the best, in those I was relaxed I usually had a sub par day.  I suppose the nerves keep me grounded.

I am still doing power hour and I have been running in the evenings on those days….Then on Tuesday and Thursdays I am doing interval training on the treadmill, urg and bike, followed by a weight circuit with mike (my trainer) essentially we do the workout that SOFletes sent me only with some variations from week to week.  I usually follow that workout up with some live draws and face off drills with the WAC “clampers”.  It is good because by the time I get out there I can generally NOT feel my upper or lower body from the circuit and intervals.  In fact it is humbling because the average weight and height of the WAC face off men is like 150 and 5′7, and when I am in this condition even they can muscle me if I dont get off the X quick.  It has really kept me on my toes.

I have been trying to keep myself busy with some fun activities on the weekends to keep my mind off of all this.  this last weekend I went to Towson, and spoke at a alumni dinner, then went to the TU/Drexel game.  I have to say, Drexel is BIG.  They had some real horses on that squad, and they have come so far since I graduated.  Unfortunately the tigers lost but it was a real nail biter, it came down to the last 20 seconds, but the “gers” could not punch one in to tie it up.  Either way it was a great weekend, and watching them play got me even more fired up to suit up for another season.

I am still interested in hearing what you all might have to say about gearing up for a season of battle on the field.  what gets you fired up?

well ladies and gentlemen, we are about four weeks away from training camp, and it is crunch time.  i have increased my cardio, continued to push myself in “power hour” and to be honest i continue to crush the weights.

i recently realized that this was all working when i decided to throw on a shirt that i have actually have never fit into. another gift from sofletes from a few years ago.  he got me a large, and said it was because i was a meathead and figured i would want something tight…i think he got the large with the intention of letting me know that he thought i was fat.  either way i am officially willing to wear this shirt in public(well at least in the gym), it reads:

Just a little spin off of a great movie (fight club).  by the way “ioc” is a recon marine unit (at least i think) and yes i do know that it was made for meat heads to wear but hey i think i am a meathead at heart.  dare i say “metro meathead”…i am defintely a “metro redneck”.  anyway i love that i can wear a large and at worst i look like one of those jerks inthe weight room in a wife beater, who is doing curls in the mirror, grunting, and taking frequent water breaks at the water fountain near the yoga studio, i love red bull.  ok i think you get the idea.

lets get down to business.  today i got an e-mal from trey reader of the new jersey pride, wanted to know what size jersey i wanted, uhhhhh hello xxl.  and for cryin out loud how many options do we really need for elbow pads…some of these things freakin things cover your whole dang arm..what ever happened to taking it like a man?  i have requested the absolute smallest elbow pads that are available, and the smallest shoulder pads that warrior makes, even though i have no plans on wearing shoulder pads.  what about the shafts?  ummmmm, dont they just sell titanium anymore?  oh, you mean there are 400 different variations of titanium and several hundred “alloy mixes” out there…i chose two shafts that i never plan on using…red diamond thingy-ma-jiggers, that will be traveling to southern md to my wifes cousins, that is of course if they dont already have one.

now to the heads…i mean i dont have a freakin clue about the heads…i use an edge that i baked in 2001 and a blade that paul cantebene gave me since they are hard to come by anymore(the original blade mind you) soooo what is a “clutch” and a “truth”?  nevermind i’ll just take one of each, by the way in the case you were wondering i would like my ferrari in black, thats right baby dont forget the navi in that joint.

huh, you arent buying us cars. . .what about an apartment for the season? no d***ok well i at least get a signing bonus dont i?  huh?  well i know i get a new helment and some new gear, that and the oportunity to smash heads with some dudes that i quite honestly believe are over rated (no names, sorry).

the count down has begun, in the next couple of weeks i will be pushing myself to the limit.  i would love to hear any of your comments, on how you like to get ready for the begining of your season.  how do you relax, get pumped up, and how do you get your mind in the right place to compete for a whole season of pounding it out on the field?

hopefully some of you can give me some suggestions for how to get geared up that i dont already use…thanks in advance!

Whats up Folks?

Im in a pretty good mood today, as it is my birthday SWEEEEEET.  I started the day off with “Power Hour” and then hit the road for some client meetings, and got back just in time for a office lunch honoring yours truly.  Although it was a pretty awesome gesture, they surprised me with one of my favorite meals from BEFORE I started training…It was a sandwich called the Mayflower…16 inches of sub with turkey, stuffing and cranberry sauce, BRUTAL.  of course I ate as much as I could as not to be rude, but man do I feel like crap!  The Ladies in the office dont seem to get the training thing, but none the less they are very thoughtful.

OK Back to Lacrosse.  I am starting to get the itch real bad, the other night at WAC practice it started to feel like everything was falling into place.  Im hitting the whistle well, reading my wing play, and getting the ball to the right people after winning the face-offs.  not to mention my intensity seems to have grown immensely, I actually think some of the younger guys on the WAC team are scared of me.  And why not? Im completely mysterious to them. All they know is that I used to coach at WAC, I used to play in the MLL and I am about twice their size, oh and my idea of mental training for the Washington college “x”men it to tell them exactly how much they suck (of course in a constructive yet blunt manor).  Either way it feels good to be more like I was in college, INTENSE.

A few weeks back Trey Reeder from the New Jersey organization sent me a few questions about who I am on and off the field, and today they were posted on the “Pride Website”.  This is when it really hit me…IM BACK.  New Jersey always treated me well, even when I was just out of college, because of this I promised Pete Jacobs (the head coach) that I would get into the right kind of shape to help his team to compete(face offs are an area of concern, as they should be).

I think today will end up going in the category of “set back” once my evening is over, since I am going to dinner with the family tonight and lunch was clearly not the kind of meal I would have normally eaten. However, as a whole I am on course, and cannot see any reason why I will not be ready for this season.

In the meantime HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO MEEEEE!

OK, so it has been a couple of weeks since I posted, sorry.  Between work and working out and finding time to spend with my wife, I have been a bit busy.  So when I got back from the ski trip I was eager to get back in the weight room, I was also eager to get back on the scale.  The thing is I have been building my cardio, and eating healthier but the weight had, simply NOT been “falling off” like mike, and I had hoped.  Sooooooo, I started “logging” my eating habits…yeah I said I was “logging” my eating habits…SWEET.

As it turns out I was WAY over the top in carbs. I though all of the whole grains and granola would be helping me lose weight however,  since I was eating sooo freakin much of it I was just staying the same.  Now dont get me wrong, I have probably put on 7-10lbs of muscle, so I was losing fat, just not at the rate I wanted to…..long story short my weight had actually gone up,  WHAT? 240lbs REALLY?!?!?!  I mean my endurance is up my strength is up and my stamina is great. . .F-WORD!

Since I was “Logging” my eating, we came to this conclusion I needed to start on a high protein, veggie and fruit diet with limited carbs. . .as it seems I have plenty of FAT for my body to feed off of for energy. Now I am not cutting carbs out comepletely so I will still have some extra energy source…

In two weeks time I have dropped almost ten lbs. . .now this is the progress that I was looking for….I am sure however some of that is water weight, so I have to stay ahead of it by eating right.

Now, if you were ever a wrestler you would know that the human body in ideal circumstances (meaning, if you eat right and exercise regularly) will “Float”, as my father used to say, two pounds over night.  that means I will lose two pounds every night, and if I exercise and continue to eat right I can get ahead of that two pounds..that’s right Breier, this is the secret!

OK, so what is the deal, with the right foods?  Man this is the hardest part, the following is an example of what I will eat in any given day:

7:30a–two hard boiled eggs, and a piece of fruit

10:00a–celery with some(but no too much) peanut butter

12:00n–salad with chick peas, black beans, carrots, Bell peppers, and a can of tuna

3:00p–an apple

6:00p–Chicken (no buttery, or oil based sauces, just bake it and eat)
Steamed cauliflower, with pepper NO salt, or butter
Canned corn again NO BUTTER OR SALT

7:00p–a piece of fruit for desert if I really want it

The thing is none of this would be that bad except that when I cook I want some flavor.  Veggies are much harder to eat when you steam them and don’t put anything on them but pepper. . .Chicken is the same, the only saving grace is oregano, other than that I don’t put anything on it, it does not make for a very extravagant meal….Note: special thanks to Shannon my wife for eating this flavorless food with me, I know it sucks sometimes!

Now here is the kicker, if you eat like this for a week or so, and force this “flavorless” food down, your body will actually begin to crave it, you will actually enjoy steamed cauliflower with pepper. . .these foods are actually pretty good as they are…most of us are just so used to “More flavor” and “Extra Cheese”. . .In short the American eating habits reflect our society. . .MORE IS ALWAYS BETTER….WRONG!

OK so I have conquered eating…task complete…sooooo, what else am I doing?  You might wonder why I titled this post “6:00am REALLY”…well, as you may recall I wanted to increase my time with Mike Duquette, and as it seems he teaches a class at 6:00a Monday/Wednesday/Friday at the college.  This way I can work with him EVERY DAY of the week, and three of those days I can get home to Shannon and the dog  by 5:30p instead of 7:00p. . .This has definitely been BETTER for me…besides the 5:00am wake up of course!

This class is all the things that Mike and I would normally do only more advanced and for twice as long, and the best part is I don’t have to pay a dime for this, since I am an assistant coach at the college this class is FREE, SWEEEEEEEET.  Some 15-20 people come to the class regularly, including my mother, the health nut, who also happens to be a beast in the weight room! (just a little shout out).  A lot of the exercises are weight enhanced and everyone is given the appropriate weight before the class starts (example: if we are using “plates” I would be given a 45lb plate and my mother would get a 10lb or 25lb).  We usually do our dynamic stretching and move into footwork, followed by several short circuits and then one 20 minute circuit, finishing up with some more stretching for the last five minutes…the class totals an hour, hence the name “Power Hour” (Sorry fellas there are no shots involved).

Oh yeah, On Tuesdays and Thursdays I am doing cardio, Last night I thought it would be a good idea to do some stadium stairs….BAD MOVE…the womens lacrosse team was practicing, so I could not exactly stop after the first one. . .so I had to forge through until they left the field to avoid looking like a slacker….BRUTAL.  Followed that up with some live draws with the team and some full field “situational face-offs”. . .This week has been a monster!

Sweeeeeet, Im headed for Deep Creek MD ladies and gentleman, after an awesome valentines day dinner, that only cost me one arm and one leg, the boys are headed out of town for a couple of nights to relive our youth.  Myself and a couple of buddies are going skiing, one of whom is former LA riptide teamate Jon Fellows, this should prove to be a fantastic couple of days!

I am not only excited about the vacation but the idea that I can use the skiing as a workout.  If you have ever been to WISP you would know that it is NOT a very hard place to ski.  Black Diamonds are more like the greens in vermont so I am not all too worried about getting hurt.  In fact I am really excited to be skiing during a time that I am in pretty good shape.  In years past I have gone, but I was not playing and not keeping in shape, creating body aches and the desire to leave the hill earlier than my friends.  not to mention when you get fatigued and try to continue you are increasing risk of injury….and don’t worry, I always know when the right time to stop is, I have already blown out my knee, I don’t need to do it twice.

Continuing with my thought that this is a great opportunity to get a big workout in, I am all together pumped, the guys who I am skiing with are pretty good skiers and if I can keep up with them I can probably burn some serious calories.  We purposely made the trip so that we leave this afternoon and wont have much time to hit the bars tonight, that way we are not sluggish in the a.m.  this way we can feel alright about hitting our favorite Deep Creek spot, the Black Bear Tavern, live music and cold bevi’s!!!

anyway I got a couple of really great workouts in on Monday, Tues, Wednesday, had to take last night off and obviously traveling tonight, so I have to get a good workout from this weekends trip.  My trainer and I have decided to up the amount of time we spend together, by one more day a week.  Reason being, I have noticed that I make significant progress on the days we meet and when we do not I feel like I could be doing more.  this way I get my a$$ handed to me more often and when I workout myself I cen feel confident that it is a much needed break…although I must say they do not feel like “breaks”.

I am still doing the workout that my meatstick marine buddy sent me, but I have decided to ad some flare to it.  I start with 30 mins on the bike on random hill at level 10 to get the blood moving.  then I do whatever the first super set is in its entirety, then immediately to the treadmill for 10 minutes of sprints.  I follow each superset with 10 minutes of sprints on the treadmill and end with some abs….KILLER

OK I will be sure to fill you in on the ski trip…one of my buddies is single so the rest of us are pulling for him!

So I gave it almost a week but I could not hold back any longer…The freakin g-men pulled it off.  Can you believe it?  Anyway it is still sinking in for me too, but I have to say Karma sure did bite the Patriots in the a$$ this time.  I wont go to far into it, but with all the indiscretions going around about the patriots, I am starting to think that maybe they have been a little too good to be doing it honestly…I mean come on, Peyton Manning calls over 60% of his plays by himself, he is clearly the BEST quarterback in the league, yet Brady is regarded as better. . .WHY?  Well before now it was simple, Brady had won three freakin championships…

Does anyone else think that if the Colts were providing Peyton Manning with the coverages during the games dont you think he would absolutely destroy whomever he was playing against ? anyway I digress…the g-men gave it to the Pats real good this time around, and it still feels great.

On to this weeks workouts.

This week has been tough, I was quite frankly hung over for almost two days after the big game.  I had worked out Saturday and Sunday so I didn’t feel bad taking Monday off (generally I go 4 days on and 1 day off) but even Tuesday was tough.  I worked pretty hard though, in fact I think I was feeling kind of guilty because I had indulged so much, therefore I may have pushed a little too hard.

I have been trying to recover from Tuesdays workout for two days, not to mention my workout with mike yesterday was a slammer, we were pressed for time so we fit a 30 minute circuit into 20 minutes, I thought my legs were going to explode.  Then I went out to the field to beat up on some college boys.  Since they had forgotten the balls I sent a freshman to get them while I did sprints with the rest of them.  Well I called them sprints but since they had just gotten done doing sprints with the rest of the team and I was coming off of a circuit, we all looked a little more like wounded race horses. . OK I looked like a wounded race horse, they were more like Shetland pony’s!

Finally the “Frosh” got back and we went right into live draws, the rules were the same, no letting up until the ball was off the ground.  I have to say for a bunch of tired guys we really got after it.

Today I woke up and it all caught up to me, I was supposed to do another circuit with Mike Duquette but I thought it would be better to hit the bike for a while(to get the lactic acid out) and get a major lift in…that I did.  I have to say the new workout is definitely making a difference, I can actually see the begining of a six pack starting to emerge, and my legs and upper hamstrings are clearly stronger and more defined than maybe ever…now lets not get excited even in my best shape ever I have never had more than a 4 pack, this just means I am starting to get into the kind of physical shape I will need to be in to take on the MLL’s finest.

Anyway tomorrow is going to be the best workout of the week, I am hitting the gym hard followed by some sprints and then going to do some scrimmaging with the team (WAC).  I fully expect to be spent when it is all over.

I will end on this note, although I love the Giants and I love football, I am real glad it is over.  for the most part I do not drink that often.  outside of football season you can expect maybe a beer or two on the weekend and maybe a few glasses of wine with dinner during the week.  This football season really put a tax on me, and it was most definitely hindering early week workouts.  Now it is over, and I can completely focus on diet and conditioning…until next time “ALL HAIL THE NEW YORK GIANTS”.
