Vail Lacrosse Shootout Day 3 – June 28, 2010

The Masters Championship was the highlight of the Vail Shootout on Day 3 as two-time defending champ Jagermeister tangled with newcomer and mostly Colorado-based Team Genesis for the title.  It was a hard fought game that saw Genesis score with just under five seconds remaining to claim the win and their first ever Vail title.  See the write-up below for a more detailed game story.

The Grandmasters division also crowned their champion as the Quicksilver Eldest Statesmen beat Los Viejos de Adidas 11-2.  The Grandmasters all played their games at 8:30am, which was perfect for them, but probably a little early for those who stayed out late on Sunday night.  For those that did make it early to Ford, it was a convincing win for Quicksilver Eldest Statesmen.

On the high school side of things, the Dr. Tom Watts Memorial got through its Division 1 and 2 Quarterfinals.  Among the semifinal contenders for Monday’s action are Team Ohio, Team Colorado, FCA Lacrosse and the Baltimore Crabs.

Masters Division:

In a fantastic, frantically paced final, Genesis stalled Jagermeister’s bid for a three peat championship with a thrilling 12-11 win in the 2010 Masters Tournament at Vail. Masters division all star Mike Roth scored the winner on fast break feed from Ryan Ferrin with a mere four ticks left on the game clock.

Genesis’ Alex Smith, tournament MVP, was the star of the day making 18 saves. His excellent play was marked with several big stops to keep Genesis in the game; he finished the day blocking 62% of Jagermeister’s shots.

The deal seemed sealed when Roth scored to put Genesis up by 2 with only three minutes left to go, but Jagermeister quickly answered with 2 goals in the next 30 seconds to tie the game with 2:30 left.

Mike Napolilli of Genesis paced the game with 6 points on 4 goals and 2 assists. Roth finished the game with 4 goals while Ferrin ended with 4 points having 2 goals and 2 assists. Tournament All Stars Greg Peters and Marc DiGiovanni from Jagermeisters led their side with 5 points each, Peters on 4 goals and 1 assist, DiGiovanni on 2 goals and 3 assists.

Dr. Tom Watts Memorial Boys U-19

The second day of the Dr. Tom Watts Memorial Tournament saw all of the top seeds advanced to the semifinals of their respective brackets.

The most competitive game of the day saw Team Ohio defeat True Lacrosse of Chicago, 14 - 13.  True lacrosse trailed early but was able to keep the game tight in the second half and hit the post with less than 20 seconds left but was unable  to tie the game.  Ohio was hindered by limited roster depth and will need a strong showing and a good night’s rest to overcome their numbers.

Colorado was victorious over Lawrenceville in the second quarter final.  The game was well contested for the first half although Colorado had a decided advantage of position time but struggled with getting their shots on goal.  Colorado put the game away in the second half as Lawrenceville could only muster one goal in the final two periods.

In the most lopsided result of the second round, FCA routed NorCal by a score of 20 - 6.  The outcome of this game was never in doubt.  NorCal made a brief run in the second period but FCA answered with 9 goals in the second quarter.   FCA had 9 goals scorers in the game and will be a tough match-up for Colorado going into tomorrow’s semi-final matchup.

Perennial tournament favorites, the Baltimore Crabs, looked well on their way to a sixth straight Tournament finals birth overwhelming Brady’s Bunch 16-7.  The Crabs are seeking a fifth straight championship and will be facing Team Ohio that expended a lot of energy in their quarterfinal game.

Division I semifinals will be on Avon 1 at 11:00 and 1:00 Tuesday.
