Duke has a rematch against UNC in the second part of the ACC tourney Friday at 7:30
Why it is important: With a Duke win, both Duke and UNC have a virtual lock on teh NCAA Tournament. With a Duke loss, their bid to the tourney gets a little murky.
Duke is 11-4 with quality wins over Loyola and UNC. They have lost to Denver, UPenn, Notre Dame, and Maryland
Duke is led by Jordan Wolfe (40goals,19assists), Josh Dionne (28g,4a), and David Lawson (24g,10a). In net is Kyle Turri with 8.64 goals against average, and a 51.8 save percentage.
UNC is 10-3 with quality wins over Fairfield, Princeton, Maryland, and Hopkins. They have lost to UMass, Notre Dame, and Duke
UNC is led by Marcus Holman (32g,31a), Joey Sankey (32g,11a), and Jimmy Bitter (24g,17a). In net is Kieran Burke with 9.37GAA and 56.5% save.
In the last meeting Duke dominated possession. They won 17 of 23 face-offs (62.4% on teh year). This was particularly crucial in the second and fourth quarters as Duke won all 11 face-offs in these two quarters. The Blue Devils outshot UNC 20-11 and outscored UNC 7-2. This was particularly damaging in the 4th quarter as UNC started down by 1 and could not mount a comeback as Duke sat on the ball and incurred 3 shot clock warnings (5 for the game).
While I think UNC is a better all round team, Duke’s ability to win face-offs, and their clock management will prove too much for UNC…again. Plus Duke has not lost to UNC since March of 2010.
